Sealants are a critical part of the dental treatment process in order to keep your mouth healthy and give you lasting dental health. Cavities are a common part of dental concerns, and often form on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where there are small grooves called pits or fissures. However, sealants provide a solution to preventing cavities and improving overall resistance and strength of teeth. Sealants are a mini plastic resin type cover that is put onto the teeth. Often, we aim to apply sealants to any cavity-prone teeth at the end of each dental appointment, especially for children or those with extremely decay-prone teeth.

Do I need dental sealants?

Often, dental sealants are a strong preventative measure for anyone, children or adults. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities, which when left untreated, can lead to advanced tooth decay or even full-body infections. If your teeth are more prone to cavities than normal, sealants may be recommended.

How are sealants applied?

Dental sealants are applied at the end of a dental appointment. Your dentist will begin by drying off the teeth slightly and applying a pre-gel. Then, the sealant will be brushed on with a small brush and will take a few minutes to set.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants work as soon as they are applied. In general sealants protect against 80% of cavities for up to two years, with efficacy decreasing each year. However, for best results, we often recommend sealants be applied every appointment, or every other appointment.

Do I need to change my dental routine after getting sealants?

You will not need to make any specific changes to your dental routine. However, after sealants are applied, you may be instructed to wait a short amount of time directly after application before eating or drinking, in order to give sealants the full time to set.
