St. Cloud Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is extremely common; however, many people do not know what all is involved in periodontal disease, and periodontal therapy as a treatment solution. Periodontal disease is commonly referred to as gum disease, an infection in the gums which function to hold the teeth in place. Gum disease has multiple stages, and by catching it early, you can prevent further damage. In early stage gum disease, or gingivitis, gums are generally swollen and red, and may bleed with brushing. In later stages, the gums will begin to recede, swell and bleed heavily, and can even cause teeth to loosen and fall out. If left unchecked, studies have shown gum disease can also be linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimers, and fertility concerns for women.

Treating Gum Disease

When treating gum disease, catching it early is vital. At every dental appointment with River City Dental, we check on the overall condition of your gums, as well as asking you questions about your gum health and any concerns you may be noticing during brushing. Regular dental visits allow for us to catch, diagnose, and treat any stage of gum disease. Some periodontal therapies include scaling and root planing, which is a form of deep cleaning of the decay or damaged tissue, as well as possible antibiotic therapy for severe cases. Our practice believes in helping you foster full body care, and we will work with you to help you build a comprehensive at-home care routine to keep your gums in good condition between visits.
